Let's Chat About the Best Dating App
I’m constantly asked by client, ‘What is the "best" gay dating app’? Sorry to say, that differs by personality!
Dating apps vary in purpose, so think about what you want and the important features before choosing one. From my time on the apps, here are some popular gay dating apps that I know and trust.
Grindr
Grindr is one of the most well-known and widely used gay dating apps. It's designed primarily for casual hookups and offers a geolocation-based matching system. Its large user base and simple interface are well-known.
Pros and cons include: It’s easy to upload and you can possibly find a pretty quick hook up if that is what you are after, but there are lots of ghosting, catfishing, and bots on here as well.
So be careful.
Scruff
Scruff is a fave of mine. This is where I met my partner! It’s geared more towards dudes who are into beards and bears. It also tends to skew older which can be great for us who are no longer twinks. Scruff caters to a diverse range of interests, from casual dating to more serious relationships.
Pros and cons include: It includes features like profile options for bear subcultures and travel planning for LGBTQ+ events, however like Grindr there can be ghosting and catfishing but not as much as Grindr.
Tinder
While not exclusively a gay dating app, Tinder is widely used by GBTQ men. It offers a large user base and allows you to specify your sexual orientation and match with people of the same gender.
Pros and cons include: It’s very popular so you can meet a wide range of guys, but some guys use it for hook ups as well so they aren’t that serious about dating.
Hinge
As mentioned in my previous post, Hinge is not exclusively a gay dating app, but it is known for its focus on fostering meaningful connections and relationships. It's inclusive of the GBTQ+ community and can be a good choice for those looking for something more serious. This is my personal favorite.
Pros and cons include: Guys are pretty serious about dating on this app, but you can’t write your own bio on Hinge and some of the profile questions are clunky and it would be better if you could post your own.
OkCupid
OkCupid is a mainstream dating app that is inclusive of LGBTQ+ users. It provides extensive profile options and compatibility matching based on various factors, making it suitable for users seeking diverse types of relationships.
Pros and cons include: It’s a popular app and you get a lot of features for free, but it skews young so if you are 30+ you may have better luck with the others.
Ultimately, the best gay dating app for you will depend on your personal preferences, relationship goals, and the type of experience you're seeking. It's a good idea to try out a few different apps to see which one aligns most with your needs and expectations.
